Storymaps are web stories, presenting cartographic themes both visually and interactively. To mark the occasion of its aniversary year, the NGI is publishing some of these storymaps on different historical and cartographic topics.
New borders for a new country
In the 19th century, defining borders became crucial with the rise of nationalism and nation states. After Belgium’s abrupt separation from the Netherlands in 1830, the new borders with the Netherlands and Luxembourg had to be carefully determined, a process that took no less than 15 years and in which the Dépôt de la Guerre played a key role. In this storymap, you will discover this fascinating piece of history through historical maps, illustrations and quotes from those involved.
