Deeply rooted in history, younger than ever and ready for the future.

Welcome to the website dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the National Geographic Institute (NGI). On the occasion of its anniversary year, the NGI proudly remembers the past and looks forward to the future.

The NGI is the Belgian authority on geodata and cartography. In its current form, the NGI has been literally mapping Belgium for five decades, from historical maps to digital datasets. Thus, the NGI supports the government, the private sector, science and society. Today, with a strong focus on innovation and the future, the NGI acts as a federal geobroker: it collects, organises and makes accessible reliable geographic information about the entire Belgian territory.

The NGI is deeply rooted in history and is fully aware of its origins.

The National Geographic Institute was created by the Act of 8 June 1976 and forms part of a long scientific and industrial tradition dating back to Belgium’s independence. Its origins lie in the Dépôt de la Guerre et de la Topographie (War and Topographical Depot, KTD), which was established in January 1831. The NGI can therefore look back on a rich history spanning nearly two centuries.
