The geodetic monument on the Kemmelberg (Kemmel Hill)

On the top of the Kemmelberg stands a concrete pillar with the inscription ‘IGM Kemmel Oct. 1951.’ This geodesic monument commemorates the role this site played in the first triangulation of Belgium in the 1850s. In addition, the point served as a tie point for international triangulation networks. The monument contains an iron rivet that still serves as a geodetic reference point for today’s measurements. To mark this anniversary year, the NGI is placing a plaque on the monument, explaining its significance and history in a few words.
