From heritage to innovation: the NGI unveils its anniversary website

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary under its current name, the National Geographic Institute (NGI) has launched a brand new anniversary website ngi50ign.be

Delve into a rich, fascinating history spanning almost two centuries. Although the NGI has existed in its current form since 1976, its origins date back to the establishment of the Dépôt de la Guerre (War and Topographical Depot) in 1831. Its primary mission? To provide the army with high-quality maps. The NGI has been evolving continuously ever since. It has implemented many innovations over the centuries and reinvented itself in its role as a federal geobroker, while always playing a key role geo-intelligence.

The anniversary website is much more than a retrospective of NGI’s history: it is an invitation to rediscover the history of cartography in Belgium, to better understand the current challenges and to look ahead to the future.

• special publications in 2026, including two atlases created especially for NGI’s 50th anniversary, in close cooperation with the publisher Lannoo, and the issue of a series of thematic stamps in coordination with Bpost;
• an overview of the numerous events that will mark this anniversary year, with nearly 20 events highlighting NGI’s know-how, partnerships and ambitions;
