From heritage to innovation: the NGI unveils its anniversary website
On the occasion of its 50th anniversary under its current name, the National Geographic Institute (NGI) has launched a brand new anniversary website ngi50ign.be
Delve into a rich, fascinating history spanning almost two centuries. Although the NGI has existed in its current form since 1976, its origins date back to the establishment of the Dépôt de la Guerre (War and Topographical Depot) in 1831. Its primary mission? To provide the army with high-quality maps. The NGI has been evolving continuously ever since. It has implemented many innovations over the centuries and reinvented itself in its role as a federal geobroker, while always playing a key role geo-intelligence.
The common thread of this anniversary “Deeply rooted in history, younger than ever and ready for the future.” is really brought to life here..
The anniversary website is much more than a retrospective of NGI’s history: it is an invitation to rediscover the history of cartography in Belgium, to better understand the current challenges and to look ahead to the future.
De jubileumwebsite belicht deze evolutie met rijke en interactieve inhoud:
- a timeline showing the major milestones in NGI’s history and cartography in Belgium;
- compelling Storymaps that highlight historical and cartographic themes in a visual, interactive way. The first publication, “New Borders for a New Country,” covers Belgium’s independence and the demarcation of its borders;
- special publications in 2026, including two atlases created especially for NGI’s 50th anniversary, in close cooperation with the publisher Lannoo, and the issue of a series of thematic stamps in coordination with Bpost;
- an overview of the numerous events that will mark this anniversary year, with nearly 20 events highlighting NGI’s know-how, partnerships and ambitions;
- a page featuring stories and testimonials. To add to this, we invite everyone to share memories, experiences and retrospectives on the history of NGI and the evolution of cartography.
NGI created this site as an online showcase of its history, expertise and ability to reinvent itself and innovate. The website also attests to the crucial importance the Institute places on the strategic value of geographic information, which is essential to understanding, analysing and helping shape the evolution of our society.
